The Winthrop Playmakers proudly announce auditions for their 2008 production of West Side Story

"The best known love story in Musical Theatre"

Audition Dates and Times:

Auditions will take place by appointment at the Playhouse (60 Hermon street Winthrop, MA) Sunday, March 2 (7pm) and Monday (7pm), March 3, with callbacks being Tuesday, March 4.

For five decades the music of Bernstein, the lyrics of Sondheim and inspiration of Robbins have been thrilling audience members through a classic story that is relevant in any era and a challenge to all performers In this production we are honoring that classic era of the late the 1950's and will also add a level of raw realty through direction concept, vocal delivery and hard hitting choreography. Each cast member will be challenged through intense vocal expression, character passion and dance ability.

Rehearsals will commence March 30th taking place Sunday afternoon/evening, Monday and Wednesday.
Performance dates: Fri 20th, Sat 21st @ 8pm Sun 22nd @ 3pm, Fri 27th @ 8pm, Sat 28th @ 3pm and 8pm Sun 29th @ 3pm

Tech Week: Tech week will begin on Sat 15th June with a full tech day including cue to cue. There will be 3 more full dress rehearsals that week.

All auditioning for youth roles should look between the 18-22* age range and also in keeping true to the 1950's image (and the extreme dance intensity) be physically fit.


Auditions for the Adult roles (Doc, Shrank, Krupkee and Gladhand) will take place right at 7pm on the Sunday and Monday as there is no Dance requirement.


Vocal and monologue auditions will be in a closed environment. Dance will take place in groups
(as will call backs)

Auditions are by appointment (please allow at least 1.5 hours as auditions will be in groups) and will consist of intense dance routine (dress appropriately and give yourself extra time to warm up), Vocals, which we ask you prepare to up to 32 bars of 2 contrasting songs in the style of the show, though not from the show (please bring sheet music in the appropriate key and note we may not require you to sing the full 32 bars). Audition will also consist of a prepared short monologue which will be provided to all auditioning 2 weeks before to be delivered in the style of the show or character you are auditioning for. Readings from the script and vocals from the show will take place at call backs.
